Behind the scenes, I’m working on an 80s Music section for 80sNostalgia. It has been in need of one for absolutely ages, and because the amount of music that was produced in the 80s was so vast, this section is taking yonks to write.

In the mean time, why not check out Wired for Sound by Tom Bromley.

Some Blurb

It’s the early 1980s and a new generation of pop stars are about to take centre stage …

Wired For Sound chronicles the rise and fall of eighties music, from the Band Aid highs of Duran Duran, Wham! and U2 to the Band Aid II lows of Bros, Jason Donovan and Wet Wet Wet. In loving detail, it explores the themes that defined the charts of the time: from music videos to VW badges, synthesisers to stadium rock and from Radio One to Frankie saying relax.

Tom Bromley captures, too, the experiences of the smalltown boys and girls who grew up listening to the music: a generation of Smash Hits readers and Sony Walkman owners, Top of the Pops viewers and C90 cassette compilers. Evoking an era when it really mattered who was number one, Wired for Sound is an affectionate celebration of both a musical youth and the decade when young guns really went for it.

Some Quotes

‘Tom Bromley’s detailed and evocative memoir of the 80s music scene is funny, warm and joyously spot on. Whether or not you grew up in the 80s, you will be transported back with him to the most creative & flamboyant era in pop music history.’ Carol Decker

‘The 1980s is not a period I ever thought I’d want to return to, musically or otherwise, but in Tom Bromley’s self-deprecating hands reliving the age of Wham! and Duran Duran is a joy. Personal anecdotes lead to historical reflection: memories of listening to a radio on Sunday evenings turns into a history of the charts. Along the way he peppers the story of an 80s music childhood with some surprising facts. Best of all, Bromley revels in all things uncool … Wired For Sound is a witty and likeable tribute to the innocent, childlike charms of pop music.’ Will Hodgkinson

‘Really enjoying the book. Anything that starts with a quote from Strawberry Switchblade immediately has me hooked’ James King

‘Enjoying it immensely and have laughed out loud on many occasions. Brilliantly constructed … I thought I knew a lot about the eighties – after all, I was there – but there’s no way I am going up against Tom in an eighties trivia pub quiz’ Roland Orzabal
