Last year there was an Indiegogo campaign to release a redesigned ZX Spectrum. The new Spectrum would be adapted from its full keyboard design into a handheld one that you plug into the TV and play games directly.
This new ZX Vega was to be a fully working, self contained unit, and by no means just a bluetooth keyboard. The Vega hardware contains everything you need to play Spectrum games straight out of the box. You would just need a TV to play it on!
Interest was so huge in this new Spectrum that it was funded within 36 hours, pleasing thousands of fellow Speccy fans. I, for one, was a HUGE Spectrum fan back in the 80s and 90s. Even nowadays a week doesn’t go by where I don’t play some Speccy game or other. (I’m not fortunate enough to still have a working Spectrum up and running, but I do play on emulators a huge amount!) So I am SO looking forward to this!
The ZX Vega was officially showcased to backers recently, at the official launch party.
Full production of the first 1000 units ZX Vega commences on 16th July at SMS Electronics and the first batch of consoles should be with the early backers a few days later.
