One banana, two bananas, three bananas, four… Eek! Despite the fact that I am allergic to bananas I will continue. In the mean time can someone call for an ambulance please.

This was a bit of a strange on from Hanna Barbera because it features live people, and which is not their usual thing. OK, admittedly the people were dressed up in costumes, and there were cartoons scattered throughout the show for good measure, but still it wasn’t their usual thing.

The Banana Splits consisted of Bingo, Fleegle, Drooper and Snorky. They were basically clowns dressed up in freaky costumes who fell over every three seconds, told some very unfunny jokes, and well err were basically very annoying.

For some strange reason though, while I was watching the video I couldn’t pull myself to turn it off. It may have had something to do with the fact I was suffering from the mother of all hangerovers, and movement was not an option, or it might have been that there was something slightly entertaining there.

I know lots of people loved this show. I can’t quite see why, but to be honest when we were kids, we’d watch anything. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt and say that it was either your bag baby, or it wasn’t. Sorry to say, it didn’t twiddle my knobs.

On the upside though (I’m not going to slate it completely, cos I’m bound to get complaints from the fans), the dune buggies were pretty damn cool, and quite frankly I could listen to the theme music all day long.
Sprinkled in the middle for good measure were some other HB programs, such as The Arabian Knights, The Three Musketeers and Danger Island. There had to be something to give some light relief from the exceptionally poor jokes (Christmas Crackers didn’t even stoop as low as the Banana Splits), otherwise you’d end up crying in front of the TV.

Some loved it. Some hated it. That’s life!
