Celbase

My new favourite site is Celbase. They are a new site who specialise in selling animation cels, the individual hand-painted pictures used to create cartoons.

Celbase have hundreds of animation cels for sale, from many 80s cartoons such as The Real Ghostbusters, Bravestarr, He-Man, Ewoks and X-Men.

In all honesty, I would absolutely love to buy everything that they sell. For now I've settled for a cel from The Real Ghostbusters of Peter Venkman which, if you would like to see, I've added to the photos in the official 80sNostalgia facebook group.

During November, Celbase are having a competition in which you could win a production cel from The Real Ghostbusters. All you have to do is visit their Facebook group and click "Like". One random person will be chosen from all the followers at the end of November, and they will win a unique hand-painted animation cel from The Real Ghostbusters. It is so simple!

Rock of Ages The Musical

Rock of Ages is a live show, currently running at the Shaftsbury Theatre, that celebrates the classic/glam rock music of 1980s L.A. It features legendary hits from bands of the time like Whitesnake, Poison and Styx.

It stars Justin Lee Collins and Shayne Ward, with live performances of many 80s rock songs.

I have two tickets to give away for it, and all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning them is be willing to write a short review of it afterwards.

If you would like the chance to win tickets to watch the show, send an email to webmaster@80snostalgia.com, with the subject "Rock", to be entered in to the draw.

It doesn't matter if you have reviewed things before or not. If this is the first thing you'll have reviewed, then great! All that matters is that you are a fan of the 80s and are willing to have a go at writing a short review after watching it. Your review will be put onto 80sNostalgia.com, and potentially read by *millions!

If you HAVE reviewed anything before, feel free to include a link to your previous reviews. I'd love to read them!

*probably not actually millions, but quite a lot in any case.

80s Cartoons Auction

The wonderful 80sCartoons website is having a charity auction in aid of the NSPCC.

Up for grabs are some amazing 80s items including Mr. Benn DVDs signed by the creator of Mr. Benn, David McKee, one-of-a-kind signed sketches by Raggy Dolls animator Mark Mason and animation cels from the Smurfs cartoon series.

Claire, owner of 80sCartoons, says "I wanted to celebrate the launch of the new look 80sCartoons.co.uk with something special. Usually a competition would suffice, but I thought this time to try something different - a charity auction! I started contacting people, and everyone was really interested and up for helping out - resulting in some seriously fantastic items. 100% of all final auction prices will go directly to ChildLine - we all enjoyed these cartoons when we were young, so it only seemed right to help support the kids of today. Check them out, place a few bids, and hopefully you'll win something awesome (that's if I don't get there first)! Good luck!"

The auction runs from October 2nd to October 12th. For further details, please visit 80sCartoons/auction.php

Eat The Treat

Remember in the 80s when you went to the shop with your pocketmoney in hand, and bought your favourite chocolate bar?

I used to imagine buying one of each type of chocolate bar, and keeping a list of ones I'd eaten so I'd know what to buy next time. I'd eventually have eaten my way through the full chocolate catalogue, pocketmoney allowing.

It was one of those things that I never got around to... Until now!

I decided the time was right, and I finally decided to give this childhood dream a go...

Please visit my new site EatTheTreat.co.uk and see which chocolate bars I've eaten, which ones I've still to work my way through and which ones are awful.

KajaGooGoo Return to the UK Charts!

Kajafax, the Kajagoogoo fan site, needs your help to get one of the world’s most loved new wave bands back into the UK charts in May/June 2011. Kajagoogoo are about to release their first single in 28 years, so is a very exciting time for everyone who loves 80s music.

The track ‘Death Defying Headlines’ comes from the band’s ‘Death Defying Headlines’ EP and is a beautiful example of the modern KajaGooGoo sound.

The plan is to make all 80s music fans aware of the release a few weeks ahead of the actual release date, and encourage everyone to buy a copy during the release week of 6th June 2011. If we all buy just one copy from iTunes, for example, the increased sales during that wee mean Kajagoogoo get a much deserved higher chart position.

To find out more, and to hear the song itself, please visit Kajafax.

Dramarama And Beyond - 11th to 30th April 2011

During the 1980s, the single-play strand Dramarama ignited a prolific period in broadcasting for children's television, which many believe hasn't been replicated since.

Dramarama ran for seven years (1983-1989), producing 90 programmes, split between eight seasons. It spanned every genre imaginable; with spooky tales that you watched from behind the sofa to comedic capers that had you crying with laughter.

The season this April at BFI Southbank gives a selection of the unique strand that was Dramarama, along with a few of its rivals and some hard-hitting episodes from other drama series of the time.

The BFI is also delighted to welcome special guests Erkan Mustafa and Lee Macdonald to introduce the screening of Dramarama: School Days and share their memories of the 80s with you.

Inspector Gadget MAD Dash

For those of you who own iPhones, or an iPod touch, I recommend giving Inspector Gadget MAD Dash a try. It's a great, simple game that is SO easy to play, (using just one finger to jump, swing or float,) but incredibly addictive too.

The idea is simple; collect as many coins as you can while skating across rooftops, jumping to avoid gaps and bombs, and floating over dangerous fans. It's a side-scrolling race that gets faster and faster the longer you stay alive.

Compatible with Game Centre, where you can unlock 17 achievements, the game itself also has unlockables, allowing you to unlock 10 full Inspector Gadget episodes to watch. There is also an unlockable Inspector Gadget ringtone for iPhone, a soundboard of unlockable Gadget sound effects, and a copy of a Gadget comic.

There is also the opportunity to unlock a rare picture of Dr. Claw!

Absolutely great, simple game and one that I've been playing for about 2 weeks now.

Thank Santa for your favourite 80s presents!

Remember when you were young and Christmas was exciting? All those amazing presents you got on Christmas Day in the 80s?

My favourite 80s present, and most treasured possession for years afterwards, was my rubber keyed ZX Spectrum. Other Christmas delights included an Arm-a-tron from Tandy, a Stretch Armstrong, Connect 4, a Purple People Eater and a bike! Christmas was ACE in the 80s!

I was so lucky to get a ZX Spectrum. All the shops were sold out and there were HUGE waiting lists for them. I suspect a few of my friends weren't so lucky, and as a result got lesser computers like Amstrads or BBCs. Spectrums were SO hard to come by. But do you know how I actually managed to get one?

I wrote to the actual Santa, WEEKS before they started selling them in shops! I got in early, reserved one with the big guy, and on Christmas Morning he delivered!

As writing to Santa was ALWAYS fun, I've arranged a special treat for everyone who wrote to Santa in the 80s. You can write to him again to thank him for the presents you received back then! If you had great Christmas presents in the 80s, why not email Santa to let him know? Just a quick email to say thanks, and a reminder of the things you received, would really make his day. He may even email you back!

It's free to all visitors to 80sNostalgia, and it's a great way to say thanks for the great presents he brought you throughout the 80s.

Email him at : promotion finished, sorry!, and let him know what your favourite 80s present was. As I say, there is a big chance he will email you back, as he's not that busy at the moment*.

Roland Rat - Rat on the Road DVD!

I think we're all in agreement that Roland Rat is not on our screens anywhere near as much as he should be, aren't we? The man, (sorry... rodent,) is a genius!

Luckily for us 80s fans, Roland has recently unearthed copies of the Rat Tapes from his time at TV-AM in the 80s, and will be releasing them on DVD. They are packed with extras, including a full length commentary from Roland, Kevin, Errol and some bloke who claimed he invented and voiced them. (How bizarre!) The background story of how everything came about, as told by Roland et al on the extras, in genuinely fascinating and is worth the cost of a DVD on its own.

The first in the series, Rat On The Road, is due out on the 15th November and features the entire first run of episodes.

Rat on the Road was originally broadcast over six weeks during the summer of 1983. Every day Roland appeared in his trusty Ratmobile visiting different cities around the UK. The series was a milestone as it not only saved a breakfast TV station from closure but launched a rodent living legend and secured his place in televisual history as ‘the only rat to save a sinking ship’!

It also features Kevin the Gerbil and also introduced us to Errol the welsh hamster and the ‘Ratmobile’, a pink 1953 Ford Anglia!

“yes ratfans the rat tapes have been unearthed from the vaults and this is the first release in a new series of rodent dvd’s starring your beloved rodent superstar. so if yer after a bit of culture & sophisticated drama then look no further cus this is the DVD for you yeahhhh!”

Born In The 70s - Series 2!

Fellow 80s fans Jonny and Russ have just released series 2 of their online webseries "Born In The 70s"

Filmed on the nostalgia sofa, each episode shows them appreciating nostalgia in its many forms. They chat about TV, music, games, and all things 80s.

There are clips of 80s tv, parodies of iconic 80s moments and a live song at the end of each bite-sized episode.

Each episode is around 5 mins long, which is the perfect length for watching ANYWHERE. You could sneak out of work and watch it without being noticed! You could nip to the loo at a restaurant and discretely watch it! It's the perfect length.

Please don't forget to check out the earlier series too. It's so good to see genuine 80s fans say what they loved about the 80s.

George Michael Faith Anniversary

On the 27th September 2010, Sony Music will be reissuing George Michael’s iconic album, Faith, now remastered. It will be available in multiple special formats including Limited Edition Numbered Collectors box set.

When George Michael released his debut solo album Faith in 1987 it instantly caught the imagination of the entire pop world, becoming a milestone in both George Michael’s career and in popular culture. It remains a high point in pop music, as well as a measure for any artist wanting to cross musical genres and gather both popular and critical appeal.

The album confirmed George’s status as a songwriter of outstanding ability and emotional depth and it propelled him to superstar status equal to that of Elton John, Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson and Madonna. After hitting the Number One spot in the UK, the USA and many other countries across the globe, Faith went on to sell over 20 million albums worldwide. It became the best selling US album of 1988 and was awarded the prestigious Diamond Award for sales of 10 million copies.

Faith rapidly became a record-breaking phenomenon, not only producing six Number One singles but also putting George Michael on the map as the first white male artist to hit Number One on the US R&B chart. Faith features some of George’s greatest songs including Father Figure, One More Try, Faith, Kissing A Fool and I Want Your Sex.

The album was written, produced and arranged entirely by George Michael. His artistry has resulted in countless accolades, including a Grammy for “Album of the Year” and three American Music Awards, namely: Favourite Album (Soul/R&B); Favourite Male Vocalist (Soul/R&B) and Favourite Male Vocalist (Pop/Rock). Additional tributes included an MTV Award for Father Figure” (Best Direction) and two Ivor Novello Awards for “Songwriter of the Year” and “International Hit of the Year”.

To date, George Michael has sold over 100 million records throughout the world; his music sounds as fresh as it did when Faith was first released in 1987. So much so, in fact, that George Michael’s songs – including tracks from Faith – recently featured in the hit US TV show Eli Stone. As well as appearing on the show himself, George’s songs were used as a theme for each episode.

Today, George Michael continues to inspire young talent and his influence can be heard amongst many of today’s pop and R&B artists. The remastered, reissued Faith will not only delight George’s legions of fans across the world, but it will continue to influence a whole new generation of musicians.

George Michael’s Faith will be reissued globally by Sony Music. The UK release date is the 27th September.

Years ago I had a go at making some 80s Top Trumps. (Yes, I know, I'm probably infriging copyright by calling them that, and I'll gladly change it when I have a suitable alternative.)

If you fancy doing a Blue Peter and printing, cutting out and playing them, they are here for you all to download - Top Trumps

Feedback is appreciated, whether it's good or bad, or even if you have a suggestion for a toy that isn't already in the deck. Feel free to contact me via the email address on the "Contact Me" page in the left menu.

Born In The 70s

If you have a few minutes spare, you must watch these short but brilliant episodes of Born In The 70s, on BornInThe70s.co.uk

Presented by Jonny and Russ, each episode has a mix of chat, features, music and games.

Features include "What Would Jim Robinson Do?" in which Russ tries to predict how Jim Robinson (who he hates) will react in clips from early Neighbours episodes, and Beat Simon where a member of the public tries to get through all 31 stages of the beeping colour-remembering game. Each episode finishes with a damn good, sing along rendition of a classic 80s theme tune.

Watch out for them playing Knightmare in real life, in a supermarket. GO LEFT!!

Genuinely funny, and completely free!

The Raggy Dolls FINALLY out on DVD!

FINALLY! The 80s classic cartoon, The Raggy Dolls, is coming out on DVD.

Remember the theme tune? Fancy having a reminder? Click here to listen, or Right-click to download it.

It charted the adventures of a bunch of mis-made dolls, (Princess, Sad Sack, Pierre, Back-to-Front to name a few,) who climbed out of the reject bin and set out on adventures. Full of that little used belief system that programmes nowadays forget to teach - morals.

Absolutely quality 80s TV. Well worth buying for nostalgia purposes, and equally great to get if you didn't catch it first time around.

The DVD will be in shops from 21st June, but you can pre-order it from loads of online places.

The Littlest Hobo DVD!

The Littlest Hobo?!? On DVD!?!

If you were alive in the 80s, you WILL know of The Littlest Hobo. EVERYONE knows it! It was all about a German Shepherd (a dog, not a shepherd from Germany,) who wandered to a different place every episode and helped people who were down on their luck, or in trouble. His name was London.

In episode one, for example, a security guard was facing being fired when thieves kept stealing sensitive items from a warehouse he was minding. London not only helped catch the thieves, but helped to uncover that it was an inside job, so the security guard who was initially facing the sack actually got promoted!

During each episode London befriended the person in trouble and helped them out but, as soon as everything had been fixed and the person in need had been helped sufficiently, he always left. (Probably in preparation for the next episode the following week.) As the final shots of him walking off into the distance appear on screen, that gorgeous theme tune slowly fades in….

“Theres a voice, that keeps on calling me,
Down the road, that’s where I’ll always be…”

It had one of the catchiest theme tunes on the planet which, if you don’t already know it, is also downloadable from the 80sNostalgia sound archives.

Seriously, you need to buy this! The minute you put the first disc in and start episode one, your eyes will glaze over with nostalgic fuzziness.

Enjoy this for the first time on DVD, as it was absolutely awesome TV!

DVD pack contains 4 DVDs.
Extras include a sing-along version of the theme tune!
Stills gallery.

Click the image, or right here, to buy.

Until tomorrow, I'll just keep movin' on....

From the hair-tingling theme tune that transports you back to being a 10 year old, the whooshing film effect of speeding through the city and the daredevil jumps, it is by far one of the best 80s TV experiences I've had.

You don't realise how full of cheesy lines it is until, with the benefit of adulthood, you watch it years later. A particular favourite line for me in the pilot (included in the box set) is when Norman introduces Jesse to the bike. The camera slowly approaches Jesse, who finally announces "..... I just wanna ride it!" Absolutely perfect 80s TV!

All the episodes, the pilot(s!), a new Street Hawk documentary and a booklet. If you want to spend a few hours in the 80s again, this is perfect!

For the official blurb:

Jesse Mach, an ex-motorcycle cop injured in the line of duty-now a police trouble shooter , has been recruited for a top secret government mission to ride Street Hawk, an all terrain attack motorcycle designed to fight urban crime, capable of incredible speeds of up to 300 mph and immense firepower. Only one man, Norman Tuttle, knows Jesse Machs true identity. The Man, The Machine, Street Hawk.

This series has never been released anywhere in the entire world on DVD - until now!

Garry Shandling DVD Release

Before the internet, before reality TV, what television series was more humourous and with more vision than "Its Garry Shandling's Show". In 1986 Garry Shandling was poised to become a permanent guest host on Johnny Carsons The Tonight Show. Instead he took a chance of an offer from fledgling network Showtime to create his own television series.

Garrys show was one of those drop-in, drop-out shows. By that, I mean you would be following the story acted out on stage as with any sitcom, but Garry would drop-out of the story to explain things to the audience and the camera that would help the story progress. The other actors would be unaware of the dialogue to the audience, and just wait until Garry had finished before continuing their lines. It made for unique TV.

Everything about it was funny. The part acting, part incisive dialogue, the situations, even the unforgettable theme song and closing credits. Absolute genius.

"It's Garry Shandling's Show" was award winning, mind bending television for 4 seasons and its influence is clearly seen in the best TV comedies through the decades to follow.

Enjoy all 16 episodes from the first of four seasons of this much loved classic on DVD March 22nd 2010.
